Floral and Event Design Studio // Detroit Design Co.

Updated: Mar 6, 2020

The floral arrangements Courtney from Detroit Design Co. creates are so classy, beautiful, and elegant! I’m not one to gush over flowers…but Courtney and Jeff could arrange flowers for me all day. I promise to water them! ;)

My favorite wedding with Detroit Design Co. was at Zingerman’s Cornman Farms. The amount of detail Courtney and Jeff put into the day was astounding- coordinating the entire day (from goat yoga to evening fireworks show), creating beautiful floral arrangements in the ceremony area outside the house, reception tent, and cocktail hour patio, and being just amazing people. I’ll never forget Anna + Xander’s wedding. Courtney even created a kids only tee-pee area for their son.

Get to know Courtney Szymkiw from Detroit Design Co., a Floral and Event Design Studio.

How did you get started in floral and event design?

We began Detroit Design Co. in 2015 after working in the floral industry and graphic design world for 8+ years, respectively. It felt like such a natural progression for us as sister and brother to team up and combine our talents into a floral and event design studio, with a focus on the aesthetic and personalization that an event can showcase.

What is your approach to designing weddings?

We approach weddings with our clients’ personal style being at the forefront. Whether it be their fashion sense, music taste, or affinity for Flemish artwork, we truly enjoy getting to know our couples and infuse their combined style into their big day. We believe that a wedding day is an opportunity to really celebrate who a couple is and we love being the ones to help them realize their vision.

What is your favorite wedding memory?

One of our favorite wedding moments actually took place before the wedding day. The father of our bride had been growing dahlias all summer for her bouquet–he was methodical in working with us to choose the perfect varieties to complement her color palette and gave us updates along the way about their progress. So, the week-of, we went out in galoshes and raincoats to cut blooms from his backyard garden and were able to incorporate all of Dad’s hard work into her ceremony flowers. Those dahlias made her bouquet one of our favorites to date!

What advice do you have for brides choosing vendors?

Our best advise for choosing your vendors is to ask your other vendors! We have the opportunity to work with so many wonderful photographers, DJs, bakers, filmmakers, planners, etcetera, and we’re all happy to help guide our couples towards the vendors who will most complement their style and expectations.

Why do you love working with 97 Films?

We love working with 97 Films because you care about your couples as much as we do! You’re thoughtful yet fun in your approach to cinematography and capture some of the most intimate and memorable moments during what can be such a blur of a day.

Can’t wait for the next time I work with Courtney and Jeff from Detroit Design Co.
