Roostertail Detroit Fusion Wedding

Updated: Mar 3, 2020

I loved filming Richa + Joe’s wedding celebration at the Roostertail in Detroit. They were kind and thoughtful people, and had the beautiful, yet daunting task, of creating their own new expression of love and marriage from both family traditions, especially at the Roostertail in Detroit. And even though these cultures could feel infusible to some, Richa + Joe did an incredible job, and drew people together in the process. Getting to be the eye behind the camera and showing how they did it, was an honor as their wedding cinematographer.

The first part of the wedding weekend started with a traditional American ceremony and exchanging of vows at the outside courtyard of The Café Cortina in Farmington Hills, MI. The setting was lush and vibrant and Richa wore a gorgeous white beaded gown. The next event for the weekend was the mehendi night held at Richa’s parent’s beautiful home in Northville, MI. There was henna, music, choreographed dances, gorgeous dresses and of course a lot of laughter and connecting. I love how the dancing isn’t just for the young members of the family, but the more seasoned women (and men too!), show love through dance. The house was full to the brim, and I knew Richa’s family felt honored to have them.

The next day was the traditional Hindu wedding ceremony and reception at the Roostertail in Detroit. It’s a unique wedding setting on the banks of the Detroit River with the skyline in the background. Richa + Joe both got ready, both wearing traditional dress. Richa’s intricate dress was an unforgettable red, detailed with gold stitching, accented with many gold ornaments. Once the bride and groom were ready, the baraat began with Joe riding in on a white horse to symbolically join the families and start the wedding festivities. The Hindu ceremony was conducted under a soft white tent decorated with white, pink and peach flowers. Richa + Joe both wore thick floral decorations and sat on pristine white chairs in front of floor-to-ceiling windows showing off the incredible view.

Richa + Joe kicked off the reception with a costume change, Richa donning a deep- blue gown covered in sequins and Joe looked great in a traditional suit and blue tie matching Richa’s dress. I was proud because I put my quick editing skills to the test and was able to have a day-of video playing after they were introduced at their reception. Wedding cinematography put to the test! What I filmed at the reception will end up on their full wedding video, which is good because the wedding party let loose at the reception. They rocked out to Lizzo, and a few impressed all the guests with breakdancing. Richa + Joe had an incredible wedding celebration, and I was honored to get to film this sweet couple.
